A Rip in the Very Fabric of Time (31DC2015)

Time Rip Front

Right, so these nails might look a bit more Eye of Sauron than I had originally contemplated. This manicure, which I did at the behest – the BEHEST, I tell you! – of day 24’s theme of books in the 31 Day Nail Art Challenge, is supposed to be the rainbow-hued rip in the fabric of time that a plane of passengers encounters in the 1990 Stephen King novella, The Langoliers. King employs a lot of his favourite linguistic tropes in describing the time rip (“It filled his mind, his nerves, his muscles, his very bones in a gigantic, coruscating fireflash” and “The place where life is freshly minted every second of every day; the cradle of creation and the wellspring of time”) but the bottom line is it’s gigantic, lined with flashing rainbows and if you fly through it, well…I won’t spoil this 25-year-old story for anyone, but it’s a Stephen King tale, so go in knowing that at least 60 percent of your favourite characters will die horribly. Happy reading!

  1. I was JUST talking about the Langoliers yesterday! They actually made a tv mini-series of the story, which wasn’t too good. Love the interpretation of the rip in the fabric of time – really pretty!

    • Oh my gosh, that’s a funny bit of coincidence. πŸ™‚ I read it about once a year, but I’ve never seen the mini-series – I’ve heard from more people than you that it’s a dud!

And this is really quite callous of me, but when that plane went missing, what, a year and a half ago with so little explanation, my first thought was totally “Langoliers.” It seemed as good an explanation as any. 😦

    • Thank you very much! I actually drag out old Stephen King all the time around here, although I swear I do read other authors as well. I thought this mani turned out pretty well, too, especially since I had no real game plan when I sat down. Because really, WHAT does a time rip look like anyways?!

  2. Oooh I love this! What is the indigo color?

I read that a long time ago, liked it a lot! My imagination was sooo much better than the TV mini series or whatever it was, oof…

    • Oh holy cats, I have heard that TV series was garbage (as are many of Stephen King’s properties.) I prefer the imagination route, too. πŸ˜‰

Okay, so the background to these is a mish mash of a couple of different polishes – the purple base I used is Pure Ice’s Playful Purple, the blue I used at my cuticles is KB Shimmer’s Soul Deep and the sparkly stuff that also made everything sort of shimmery and purple is CND Vinylux in Dazzling Dance. It’s like a sheer blue/purple-tinged topper that makes everything look like the night sky.
